Mack Altizer

Rodeo Producer • Inducted 2025

Mack Altizer grew up on a ranch near Del Rio, Texas. Taking after his father, World Champion Steer Roper Jim Bob Altizer, he competed in calf roping, team roping, and steer wrestling in the American Junior Rodeo Association and the National High School Rodeo Association. Altizer won the National High School Calf Roping Championship in 1976. He then went on to compete as a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association and served as the NIRA Student President.

While traveling with his college rodeo classmates, Altizer began developing his vision to help grow the sport of rodeo. It needed energy and something to get the younger generation involved. He turned to his inspiration – rock’n’roll. He started with college and junior rodeos to build his company and test his idea. In 1982, Altizer’s Bad Company Rodeo Inc. joined the ranks of the PRCA. This would be an inclusive rodeo experience with the bucking stock named after song lyrics, bullfighters that were part of the marketing team, a mix of modern music, and, of course, a little “Expect the Unexpected.”  Altizer succeeded in creating the wildest and most contemporary rodeo experience. Not only did he change the music that was played, but he improved the quality of the music playback. It felt more like being at a concert than a rodeo.

While producing rodeos was his focus, Altizer still enjoyed the thrill of competition in the tie-down, team roping, and steer roping events. He entered his own rodeos as well as Cheynne and others. To get more cowboys interested in competing in his events, Altizer created his own “Bad Company Rodeo Tours.” There was a new tour name each year, and the coveted Bad Company Tour Buckles were awarded for the most money won in each event at the end of the year. In 1998, Altizer was awarded the PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year title. He has contributed stock to the National Finals Rodeo for all of the events, both roughstock and timed event cattle.

Altizer has also been inducted into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Center’s Rodeo Hall of Fame (2024), the Bull Riding Hall of Fame (2021), and the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame (2011). He has also been awarded the Professional Bull Riders Jim Shoulder Lifetime Achievement Award (2019).
