Notable / Lifetime Achievement Class of 1979

Rodeo Notable • Inducted 1979

For nearly four decades, James Cyrus “Cy” Taillon combined sincerity, style and grace of delivery to raise the standards of rodeo announcing. First-timers in the stands became fans when Taillon explained rodeo rules to them. Hearing him, every spectator felt he was part of the action. As a result Taillon became the regular announcer for 30 years or more at rodeos all across the country, including the Western Washington State Fair and Rodeo in Puyallup, the Pikes Peak or Bust in Colorado Springs, Colo., the National Western in Denver, the Snake River Stampede in Nampa, Idaho, the Fort Worth (Texas) Exposition and Fat Stock Show Rodeo and San Francisco’s Cow Palace Rodeo. Taillon was discovered by noted rodeo producer Leo J. Cremer, who sponsored his entry into rodeo announcing after hearing him on a Great Falls, Mont., radio station. A life member, No. 91, he served on the RCA Board of Directors as the contract members’ representative from 1953-55. He was born Oct. 18, 1907, in Cavalier, N.D., and died April 16, 1980.
