Crooked Nose may be the most famous fighting bull in rodeo. Rodeo fans loved him and bull fighters dreaded him. He was born in 1977 on the Harry Vold Rodeo Ranch in Fowler, Colorado. His mother was a Mexican crossbred fighting cow and his sire was the notorious Purple People Eater, a monstrous brown Brahma fighting bull.
Crooked Nose, a reddish-brown bull with dark legs, only had one horn. According to his owner, Harry Vold, he hit the barrel so hard that he broke the horn off at his first bullfight in Oklahoma City when he was two years old. Crooked Nose helped popularize the Wrangler Bullfight Tour. Vold hauled him to every bull fight event he could. He made it to the National Finals Rodeo Bullfights many times. He was voted Fighting Bull of the Year in 1983 and runner-up for the title in 1986.
Crooked Nose was a fan favorite for his quick moves and smart reactions to the bullfighters. If a bullfighter made it past him, he was bound to get a check.
Crooked Nose retired in 1990 after the College National Finals Rodeo to Vold’s ranch and breeding program. Vold’s livestock foreman Scott Walton stated that Crooked Nose was “the kind of bull everybody hopes for. There probably won’t be another one like him. He was pretty special.”
